Sewage Treatment Plant (STP)
A sewage treatment plant (STP) is a facility designed to treat and clean wastewater from residential, commercial, and industrial sources before releasing it back into the environment. It removes contaminants like organic matter, chemicals, and harmful microorganisms through physical, biological, and chemical processes. The primary stages include preliminary treatment to remove large debris, secondary treatment using biological processes, and tertiary treatment for advanced purification. STPs play a crucial role in protecting water resources, preventing pollution, and promoting sustainable water management.
BENEFITS OF STP
- Environmental Protection: STPs help prevent water pollution by removing harmful contaminants, and ensuring clean water is returned to natural water bodies.
- Public Health: By treating sewage, STPs eliminate disease-causing microorganisms, reducing the spread of waterborne diseases.
- Water Recycling: Treated water can be reused for non-potable purposes like irrigation, industrial processes, or flushing, promoting water conservation.
- Compliance with Regulations: STPs ensure adherence to environmental laws, avoiding penalties for untreated wastewater discharge.
- Sustainable Resource Management: The by-products, such as sludge, can be processed into biogas or fertilizers, contributing to renewable energy and agriculture.
Types of Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) we design and implement
- Fill: The tank is filled with wastewater
- React: Microorganisms use the ammonia, nitrogen, and Biochemical Oxygen demand (BOD) in the wastewater
- Settle: Aeration stops and the sludge settles
- Draw: The "clean" supernatant liquor exits the tank
- Sludge wasting: When the sludge exceeds the threshold limit, it is discharged from the system Here are some more details about the SBR process:
- Mixing: The tank is mechanically mixed during the fill stage, but no air is added. This is called the anoxic stage.
- Aeration: The mixed liquor is aerated during the second stage using mechanical pumps or air diffusers.
- Settling:The third stage is when suspended solids settle without aeration or mixing.
- Decanting :The effluent is removed from the tank without disturbing the sludge at the bottom.
- Idling :This is the waiting time between filling cycles.
- SBR tanks:These can be made of steel for industrial use, coated for corrosion control, or made of concrete for domestic wastewater.
In the design of this MBBR Technology the incoming wastewater from the residents are collected in an Equalization tank and pumped via raw sewage pumps to aeration -1 and through gravity move to aeration -2 and then to the clarifier tank. The clear water from the clarifier tank flows via gravity into a filter feed tank, from this filter feed tank the water is pumped via a duty standby pump into different grades of sand media and then to carbon media filter housings. The clear water after filtration is dosed with chlorine online for disinfection and then the water gets collected into a treated water tank.
- AERATION: Air is injected into the equalization tank, aeration 1 & aeration 2 tanks to create an environment and provide oxygen for the bacteria to grow.
- BIOFILM FORMATION: These plastic carriers also known as plastic media are added to aeration 1 and aeration 2 tanks which provide a surface for the bacteria to attach and form a biofilm, this biofilm of bacteria goes around in cycles in these two tanks breaking down the organic matter which is the food for these bacteria’s attached to the media.
- SETTLING: The settling of sludge happens in the clarifier tank which houses the tube The recirculation of sludge from this tank is done with the help of a recirculation pump.
- FILTRATION: Removal of any remaining suspended solids and polishing of water is done with sand and carbon filters.
- DISINFECTION: Chlorine is dosed online with the help of a dosing pump to disinfect the water and reduce any risk of disease transmission.
Ideally suited for: Apartments, hotels, schools, colleges and industries
