Scale formation is one of the most serious water-related issues. Scale can be formed by the connection of ionised Ca with some impurities or by the connection of ionised Si with some impurities. These Ca scale and Si scale can make some big problems, particularly for industrial applications or even for the piping in the long run. Such scale cannot be scraped off so easily that cleaning of the piping or other parts in the plants is time-consuming and requires time and cost.
How Does Conventional Resin-based Softeners Work
Hard water enters the softener:
The water containing calcium and magnesium ions (hardness) enters the softener tank, which is filled with resin beads.
Ion exchange:
They utilise tiny resin beads, typically made of polystyrene and divinylbenzene, which are coated with sodium or potassium ions. These ions attract the calcium and magnesium ions from the hard water. The hardness ions bind to the resin, while the sodium or potassium ions are released into the water.
Soft water exits:
The water exiting the softener is now softened, as the hardness-causing minerals have been exchanged for sodium or potassium.
Regeneration:
Over time, the resin beads become saturated with calcium and magnesium. A regeneration cycle is then initiated. This involves flushing the resin bed with a concentrated salt (sodium chloride) or potassium chloride solution. The high concentration of sodium or potassium in the solution forces the calcium and magnesium ions out of the resin, effectively recharging it with sodium or potassium ions, ready for another softening cycle.

Traditional water softeners work by exchanging calcium and magnesium ions with sodium, reducing so so-called ‘lime hardness’. The total dissolved solids (TDS) remains unchanged in the softening process (it just replaces calcium, magnesium with sodium!)
IonFlow takes a different approach—it doesn’t remove calcium and magnesium but instead alters their structure to prevent scale formation. As a result, the measured hardness (lime / CaCO₃) may be the same, but since the water no longer causes scaling, the effective hardness (scaling tendency) drops to near zero.

How Ionflow Works
Ceramic Bead Science: How cat-ions are created
Beads: These specially manufactured quartz-like ceramic beads are formulated from natural ores found in Japan. The LTI beads exhibit a very high CEC (cation exchange capacity), which can attract a large quantity of surface charges from water.
Agitation: The agitation of beads within the activation chamber causes them to collide, resulting in localised temperature differences with water. There is a generation of surface charge and thermoelectric current due to the Peltier/Seebeck effect.
A layer of anions forms on the bead’s surface, and a corresponding second layer of cations (electric double layer) forms outside.
Interfacial Electrokinetic phenomenon: The above action creates a conversion channel where electron transfer occurs, resulting in a positive charge to water.
Dipole bonds in water: Intermolecular weak H-O bonds are present, resulting in the significant agglomeration of water molecules. These bonds break into smaller clusters in the presence of nearby positive ions.
Lower surface tension. The treated water with tiny particles exhibits lower surface tension, and it readily absorbs oxygen and carbon dioxide from the air. The CO2 reacts with ionised Calcium, Magnesium, etc., in the water to form crystals. These crystals do not form adhesive scales since they are covered by cationised water, turning them into non-sticky soft colloids.

Traditional softeners use ion exchange resin along with common salt to replace all the calcium and magnesium minerals dissolved in water, replacing them with sodium. These sodium molecules introduced into water do not form hard scales. However, this ion exchange process is ineffective against certain other scale-causing minerals, such as commonly found dissolved silica (SiO2-), which tends to form glass-like scales on hot or evaporative surfaces during use.

Specific Applications Concerning Ro
Installation before RO
Extend the life of the RO membrane significantly, and no antiscalant chemicals are required. This can be applied to both Industrial and residential use.
Installation after RO
Rejected RO water can be reused for many applications, including cooling towers, boilers and agriculture. For this application, tiny soft colloids which could stay at the bottom of the tank need to be removed.
Removal of RO for input water to the cooling tower and the boiler application
No RO use for the makeup water or for the boiler feed water is required. IONFLOW can treat any level of water in terms of hardness and TDS.
